Markdown strikethrough
Two tildes either side of the text draw a line through it. It is a GitHub-flavoured extension rather than original markdown, which is why a few older renderers ignore it.

What usually goes wrong
- Two tildes, not one. A single
~text~works on some platforms and does nothing on others, so~~is the portable choice. - Not part of the original 2004 markdown spec. A strict CommonMark renderer with no GFM extensions shows the tildes as literal characters.
- Inside a table cell you may need to escape a pipe that follows, or the row breaks.
Where it behaves differently
| Platform | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| GitHub, Obsidian, Notion | ~~text~~ works. |
| Slack | Slack uses a single tilde, ~text~. |
| Discord | ~~text~~, same as GitHub. |
For the .md file that arrives in Mail
A markdown file on a phone is the worst case: no editor, no preview, and a share sheet full of apps that want to import it into a library. The iPhone and iPad app opens it where it landed, renders it, and lets you edit and save it back.
